Term 6 - Mighty Metals
Mighty metals are everywhere! From earrings to rockets, metals have shaped the world we live in today, so we need to learn about them! In year 3, the Mighty Metals topic begins at the park. We learn to become fantastic physicists, exploring the world of forces and metals. Posing scientific enquiries, we discover the properties of metals and observe what happens when they come in to contact with different substances. Our existing knowledge is challenged when we realise that not all coins are attracted to magnets! As we learn more about magnets, we are able to predict whether magnets attract or repel based on their poles. After making fridge magnets and testing magnetism to sort through Iron Man’s soup, we are keen scientists! A particular highlight for children in this topic is designing and making a companion for Iron Man. Selecting appropriate materials, learning how to join, strengthen and stiffen the structure is what the figure needs to come alive! Ever made a parachute before? Well, the children in year 3 can offer you expert advice in how to make one. Even their skills in how to set up their own fair test develops! We investigate how objects move on different surfaces and learn how this applies to the wider world.
