FM radio building workshop

Eleven Year 6 children took part in a FM radio building workshop which was supported by John and Bob from Hilderstone Radio Society. The children used the skill of soldering to assemble the radios which they can now use to tune into their favourite radio station.

38 children across the school took part in a radio communication activity where they were using amateur radio to conduct international climate change research. They compared the data that the year 4 children have been collecting (as part of their Geography fieldwork) with people around the world. This was to help celebrate British science Week around the theme of ‘Change and Adapt’. A big thank you to Matt Payne who spent the whole day with the children.

In science club this week, the children made a universal indicator using red cabbage. They then added different acids and alkalis to make some of the colours of the rainbow.

Year 4 tracked the FUNcube satellite

Year 4 tracked a satellite across the sky and received a personal message from it. The message read - Congrats to year 4 @ St Peter in Thanet school from FUNcube1. Hilderstone Radio Society supported the session and explained how a satellite works and the important functions they perform.

Year 6 sent a message to the ISS

Year 6 children sent a message to the International Space Station as part of Mission Zero. Mission Zero offers young people the chance to have their code run in space! Write a simple program to take a reading from the colour and luminosity sensor on an Astro Pi computer on board the International Space Station, and use it to set the background colour in a personalised image for the astronauts to see as they go about their daily tasks.

Year 3 learnt Morse code and then sent a message using LEDs. They were supported by Hilderstone Amateur Radio Society as part British Science Week.

In science club this week, the children made butter by shaking a container full of double cream. We watched the fat separate from the water and clump together. We then taste tested to see how much salt we should add. Why don't you try it at home?
